Jeremy Corbin wint. Op het slagveld Syrië ontmoeten de VS, Rusland, Iran, Duitsland en de combi Cameron-Hollande elkaar.
Jeremy Corbin wint Labour verkiezingen
Jeremy Corbin; verschil arm/rijk in Groot-Brittannië zal voorlopig meer aandacht krijgen dan Israël-Palestina.
Jeremy Corbin is met grote meerderheid in de eerste ronde gekozen tot de nieuwe leider van het Engelse Labour. The Guardian: “Jeremy Corbyn has been elected leader of the British Labour party, in a stunning first-round victory that dwarfed even the mandate for Tony Blair in 1994.”
Corbin staat bekend om zijn pro-Palestijnse opvattingen. Tegen die achtergrond zegt het Palestijnse Maan News: “The election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party on Saturday quickly led to condemnation from the Israeli press who branded the veteran left-winger “anti-Israeli” and raised allegations of antisemitism.”
Het Israëlische Yedioth Ahronot: “Corbyn’s win is a nightmare for many of Britain’s 290,000 Jews. Several years ago, a Jewish Chronicle poll showed that 70 percent of British Jews were concerned about the consequences if Corbyn was elected leader. More than 80 percent of Jews expressed concern about Corbyn’s potential foreign policy and ties to Holocaust deniers.”

Na Iran: Syrië rukt op naar het middelpunt
De aanwijzingen nemen toe dat na het totstandkomen van de overeenkomst met Iran, de burgeroorlog in Syrië meer centraal komt te staan. Rusland levert wapens aan Syrië, waaronder luchtafweergeschut. Er zijn berichten dat Iran meer actief wordt en over coördinatie Rusland – Iran – Hezbollah. Engeland en Frankrijk, steeds meer veroordeeld tot de rol van internationale lichtgewicht, treffen voorbereidingen voor luchtaanvallen. Duitsland mikt op een politieke oplossing (zie hieronder) en wil daar Rusland bij betrekken. De VS blijven relatief terughoudend en voeren ten aanzien van de islamitische radicalen een politiek die vragen oproept (zie eveneens hierna).
Een goede analyse staat vandaag op de website van Juan Cole. Over Israël en Rusland: “Among those worried about a Russian build-up in Syria are the Israelis. Here is Yediot Aharanot via BBC Monitoring: “While the USA has restricted its military involvement in Syria to aerial activities Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has confirmed that Moscow has been sending military equipment and not just humanitarian assistance.”” Opmerkelijk over de Duitse tussenpositie: “German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday that while Germany needs to work with the US to resolve the Syrian crisis, it likewise needs to work with Russia.” En: “Both Germany and Israel appear worried that the Obama administration is not serious about ending the Syrian fighting.”

Ook Jerusalem Post vandaag, vindt dit een belangrijk punt: “Germany’s Merkel sees need to cooperate with Russia on Syria. “Germany and other western European powers need to work with Russia as well as the United States to solve the crisis in Syria,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday.”
Cole: VS, Israël steunen al-Qaida
Juan Cole wijdde gisteren een goed geïnformeerd stuk over de stille samenwerking tussen de VS en Israël aan de ene kant en tot de al-Qaida behorende strijdgroep al-Nusra (“Support”) aan de andere kant. Cole: “The terrible thing is that the Support Front, unlike core al-Qaeda, has actually managed to take territory and is ruling parts of Syria as a mini-state. (…) Israel appears to be de facto allied with the Support Front in the Golan Heights against Lebanon’s Shiite Hizbullah and against the Baath regime of Bashar al-Assad.” De VS vallen al-Nusra vanuit de lucht niet of vrijwel niet aan. Cole: “Amazingly, a US joint effort alongside al-Qaeda doesn’t seem out of the question. (…) The first American alliance with al-Qaeda came in the 1980s, when the Reagan administration deployed the Mujahidin or holy warriors of Afghanistan against the People’s Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and its Soviet patron. US allies such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt, supporting this anti-Communist jihad, released their radicals to Peshawar in Pakistan as support for the Mujahidin, a development that was fine with the United States.
