De terugtrekking uit Gaza in 2005 was voor Israël onvermijdelijk. Bush gaf er nog iets bij. Na de dood van Arafat werkte Abbas volledig mee.
Terugtrekking uit Gaza was ruil VS

Wat al langer werd vermoed werd (zie achtergrond, hieronder) heeft een hoge medewerker van de vroegere premier Ariel Sharon in het openbaar bevestigd: voortgaande bezetting van de Westoever plus de Gazastrook was militair niet meer mogelijk. Sharon zag kans om de terugtrekking uit de Strook een ruilobject te laten worden met de toenmalige president van de VS, George W. Bush. Israël kreeg de garantie dat in welke toekomstige vredesregeling dan ook, de grote nederzettingen (de “settlement blocs”) in de Westoever bij Israël zouden worden getrokken.
Dov Weisglass volgens de Jerusalem Post: “In exchange for pulling out of Gaza, Sharon secured a pledge from former US President George Bush that in any final status agreement for a two-state solution, Palestinian refugees would not return to Israel, but rather to their newly established state. In that same letter Bush promised Sharon that the settlement blocs would be included within Israel’s final borders. He referenced the April 2004 letter, in which both pledges were made. In that letter, Bush wrote, “In light of new realities on the ground, including already existing major Israeli populations centers, it is unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949, and all previous efforts to negotiate a two-state solution have reached the same conclusion.””
Weisglass voegde daar nog enkele opmerkingen aan toe: “Disengagement was done in full coordination with the Palestinians. All the moves were executed in total coordination with Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas, JS). He added that the Hamas takeover of Gaza after Disengagement, was “the most difficult moment for me. It was totally unexpected.””
Druk overleg over Syrië
De ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken (BZ) van Rusland en Iran spreken elkaar morgen over de kwestie Syrië. De afgelopen twee weken zijn er veel, soms onduidelijke, berichten over gesprekken over Syrië. De ministers van BZ van de VS, Rusland en Saoedie-Arabië spraken vorige week met elkaar in Qatar. De laatste twee hadden daarna een apart overleg. Duidelijk is dat de Iran-overeenkomst (het “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action”) de posities van Iran en de andere grote spelers doet schuiven. De inzet draait vooral om de vragen: Is de oorlog in Syrië oplosbaar door Assad een overgangstijd te geven, waarna hij de macht afgeeft? Kan er een gesloten front komen in de strijd tegen ISIS? Kan Iran de shiiten in Syrië en Libanon blijven steunen tegen eventuele aanvallen? Kan er een link worden gelegd met een eventuele (gedeeltelijke) ontwapening van Hezbollah? Kan voorkomen worden dat er een aaneengesloten Koerdische staat ontstaat?
Bennett geeft diasporabeleid aan extreem rechts
De nationalistisch-religieuze minister Naftali Bennett wordt ervan beschuldigd dat hij de traditionele lijnen tussen de joodse gemeenschappen buiten Israël (de “diaspora”) en Israël zelf, opzij schuift. Bennett heeft nu een groot conflict met het Jewish Agency die altijd de leiding had van het diasporabeleid. Rijke donoren (“key Jewish-American philanthropists”) beschuldigen Bennett van onbeschaamdheid. Veel onvrede richt zich op de recent opgerichte Jewish Identity Administration, een afdeling van het Ministerie voor Religieuze Zaken. Sleutelposities komen in handen van “key activists in settler and other right-wing groups”. Haaretz vandaag: “The Right-wing Cronies (vriendjes) Behind Bennett’s Diaspora Project (…) Jewish Agency asks attorney general to examine tender process, while key Jewish-American philanthropists decry ‘insolence’ by Bennett”.

Nederlandse studie naar joodse gemeenschap in Nederland
De ook in Nederland bekende publicist Manfred Gerstenfeld schrijft in Israel National News over een onderzoek onder joden in Nederland. Belangrijk object van onderzoek is de gevoelde identiteit. Hieronder enkele citaten.
“The number of those in the Netherlands who are Jewish according to Jewish law (halachically Jewish) is about 37,000. This population maintains its numbers in part because of the increasing number of Israelis living in the Netherlands, which currently stands at about 9,000. Their stay is often temporary, however, as many of them are students or ex-pats who have found work in the Netherlands. Jews who have only Jewish fathers or grandfathers, are not considered to be Jewish according to Jewish law.
“Over the past decades, the assimilation of Jews in the Netherlands has continued, much like elsewhere across Europe. The other marked trend taking place is the decline in membership of Jewish organizations. Mixed marriages are both an indicator and a stimulator of assimilation. On the one hand, they lead to a greater stability in numbers of Dutch Jews. On the other hand, the intensity of the bond with Judaism decreases.
“About 19% of Jews consider anti-Semitism to be relevant in the Netherlands. The percentage of those who say that they have personally experienced anti-Semitism has, however, declined over the past decade and stands at 22%.
