Zuckerberg gisteren; bevriend met de Chinese leider
De New York Times meldt dat de bestuursvoorzitter van Facebook, met behulp van een megadrone (formaat Boeing) ook vluchtelingenkampen wil opnemen in het streven om het arme deel van de wereldbevolking toegang te geven tot internet, in casu Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook, promoted access to the Internet as “an enabler of human rights” and a “force for peace” on Saturday, as he announced that his company would help the United Nations bring Internet connections to refugee camps. Niet iedereen is even blij met deze vorm van vluchtelingenhulp: In April, 65 organizations from around the world sent an open letter to Mr. Zuckerberg complaining that the project violated the principles of net neutrality in the guise of “access for impoverished people.”

Parallel hieraan organiseerde de Amerikaanse regering een bijeenkomst die een impliciete dreiging inhield voor regiems die de internetvrijheid belemmeren: Nearby, Obama administration officials sponsored an event to demonstrate anti-censorship tools, built with financial help from the government, for dissidents in repressive countries. “The openness of the global Internet is challenged today like never before,” Tom Malinowski, the assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, said, calling the countermeasures that companies and groups were developing “a foretaste of our response.”

Vanochtend vroeg hebben gewapende Israëlische troepen het moslim heiligdom Al-Aqsa in de oude stad van Jeruzalem aangevallen. Maan News: “Israeli forces stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque on Sunday morning, the last day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, firing stun grenades and rubber-coated steel bullets at worshipers, witnesses said. (…) Senior Palestinian officials have expressed concerns that Israel is restricting access to the compound in a bid to establish daily Jewish prayer, despite an agreement forbidding non-Muslim worship at the site.”
Politieke partijen van Israëlische Palestijnen (vertegenwoordigd in de Knesseth) doen de laatste tijd steeds vaker uitspraken over de situatie rond het Al-Aqsa complex, wat een breuk is met hun voorzichtige opstelling in de afgelopen tientallen jaren. Maan News: To “counter Israeli plots to divide Al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews, Palestinian citizens of Israel plan to flock to the mosque in masses over the next several days”, speaker of the joint Arab bloc in the Israeli Knesset Ayman Odeh wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday night. “Now there are crowds in the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and these crowds will grow larger tomorrow and the day after tomorrow in particular,” Odeh continued. The goal behind the gathering, he said, is “to uproot the idea of dividing Al-Aqsa and its courtyards.” He added that struggle to “protect Al-Aqsa” continues along with the struggle to end occupation, “and the Palestinian people as a whole.”

Religieuze zionisten vormen de nieuwe veiligheidselite
De aanstaande benoeming van de tweede man van de Shin Beth (binnenlandse veiligheidsdienst) tot hoofdcommissaris van de Israëlische politie past in een trend: religieuze zionisten, vaak met een kolonistenachtergrond, nemen topposities over die sinds de oprichting van de staat Israël meestal in handen waren van Asjkenasische joden (met een “westerse”, vaak Oost-Europese achtergrond). Hoofd van de Shin Beth, Yoram Cohen was daarvan al een voorbeeld. Een ander voorbeeld is Yossi Cohen, hoofd van de Nationale Veiligheidsraad.
Jerusalem Post: “The expected appointment of Shin Bet deputy director “R.” – whose full name will be soon published – as commissioner of police is another step in the changes that Israeli society and its elites are undergoing. [They] are products of the national-religious community, which is mostly represented by the right-wing Bayit Yehudi Party.” Over de verliezers van deze machtsverschuiving en de gevolgen binnen de strijdmacht: “Left-wingers and liberals are worried about the trend and refuse to accept the changes taking place in Israeli society. One of its most salient manifestations is the readiness of young graduates of the national-religious education system and youth movements to volunteer for public service in the security organizations – the IDF, Shin Bet and, though to a lesser degree, in the Mossad and police.”
Syrië: VS wendt zich ook tot Iran
Wat door sommige analisten al sinds begin september werd voorspeld, is aan het gebeuren. Voorspeld (c.q. gespeculeerd) werd dat de regering Obama, zodra het verzet in het Congres tegen de nucleaire Iran-overeenkomst zou zijn gebroken (wat medio september het geval was), zich tot ook tot Iran zou wenden voor een politieke oplossing van de Syrische burgeroorlog. De New York Times: Secretary of State John Kerry sought on Saturday to draw Iran into the search for a political solution to the Syrian conflict as he began a week of diplomacy over the brutal fighting there. “I view this week as a major opportunity for any number of countries to play an important role,” Mr. Kerry said at the start of a meeting at the United Nations headquarters with Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s foreign minister. “We need to achieve peace and a way forward in Syria, in Yemen, in the region itself.”
Frankrijk woont vlagceremonie bij in New York
Deze week zal de Franse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Laurent Fabius, de ceremonie bijwonen ter gelegenheid van het hijsen van de Palestijnse vlag voor het gebouw van de VN. Maan News: Laurent Fabius told reporters that his presence at the UN ceremony would highlight France’s “continued support for a two-state solution”. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Saturday he will attend a ceremony next week to raise the Palestinian flag at the United Nations, despite opposition from Israel and the United States. The Palestinians have invited hundreds of leaders to attend the event on Wednesday in the presence of president Mahmoud Abbas.
