Top-generaal IDF in Brussel voor samenwerking

De topman van het Israëlische leger (Israeli Defense Force, IDF) generaal Eisenkot, heeft in de afgelopen dagen ‘low profile’ Brussel bezocht om te praten over verdergaande samenwerking: ‘The purpose of the trip was designed to help establish unprecedented security ties involving Belgium and Israel prompted by security fears throughout Europe. staff also held meetings with high ranking military officials from the United States.’ In Israëlische publicaties wordt nu ook gesuggereerd dat in Duitsland een aanslag werd verijdeld dankzij informatie uit Israël: ‘Earlier this week, it was revealed that Germany received from Israeli intel services less than two weeks ago key intelligence regarding an imminent terror attack against a packed soccer stadium, German magazine Stern reported Wednesday.’
Syrië: Franse hardliners moeten “om”
De ‘hardliners’ in de Franse diplomatie, met aan het hoofd minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Laurent Fabius, hebben zich in de nasleep van de aanslagen in Parijs moeten aansluiten bij een meer ‘Europese lijn’ in de aanpak van de Syrische oorlog. Frankrijk gebruikt weliswaar oorlogszuchtige taal, maar stemt meer af met Duitsland en Rusland: ‘Hollande and President Vladimir Putin of Russia agreed on Thursday to coordinate strikes against Daesh and swap data to help identify the terror group positions in Syria.’
Dit ‘omgaan’ van de pro-Amerikaanse stroming in Parijs heeft ook betrekking op het verlaten van het harde standpunt, dat eerst de Syrische president Assad en zijn entourage weg moeten voordat er aan een politieke oplossing kan worden gewerkt: ‘In what appears to be a shift of position on the Syrian government by Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has said he believes it is okay for Syrian government forces to participate in the campaign against the Takfiri Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group in Syria.’
De eerste gezamenlijke bombardementen met Rusland hebben inmiddels plaatsgevonden. Er is ook overleg gaande over welke niet-ISIS opstandelingen wel of niet aangevallen moeten worden. Zelfs samenwerking met het reguliere Syrische leger wordt niet uitgesloten: “(…) there must be two measures: bombings… and ground troops who cannot be ours.” ‘He said the ground forces should be made of the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA) and “Sunni Arab forces” and can also be joined by Syrian government forces.’

Toch nuanceringen door Fabius
Fabius schuift op, tegen wil en dank
Over het aanvaarden van Assad (en de machtsstrucuur om hem heen) als tijdelijke partner was Fabius later iets genuanceerder: ‘Fabius later clarified his position, telling AFP he meant that Syrian government troops could take part in the fight against IS after a change of government. It could happen “within the context of a political transition – and only in this context,” he said.’
Spanning Rusland-Turkije voorbijgaand
Analisten komen gisteren en vandaag in toenemende mate tot de conclusie dat de spanningen tussen Turkije en Rusland na het neerschieten van een Russisch gevechtsvliegtuig, van tijdelijke aard zullen zijn: “NATO members will not be eager to make the confrontation between Russia and Turkey an important item on their political agenda“, zegt een Turkse deskundige voor Al Jazeera. Belangrijk zal zijn of beide landen overeenstemming kunnen bereiken over wie wel of niet te bombarderen. Turkije wil op zijn minst dat de Turkmenen in Noord-Syrië gespaard worden.

VS ineffectief tegen ISIS: opzet of falen?
In Washington is het ‘Centcom’-schandaal uitgebroken. De kern is dat de Amerikaanse inlichtingendiensten in de oorlogen in Afghanistan, Irak en Syrië foute informatie naar boven hebben gespeeld. Dit is niet nieuw, maar: ‘(…) the problem goes beyond analysis failure to actually meddling with intelligence about the campaign against ISIL (in Irak en Syrië), by exaggerating successes and downplaying serious setbacks in order to serve the president’s agenda.’
Het venijn zit hem nu in het feit dat de beschuldigingen over een complot waarin de VS ISIS steunen, is doorgedrongen tot de mainstream media: ‘Absurd as it may seem, the revelations about cracks in US intelligence have added fodder to conspiracy scenarios that Washington is behind ISIL. While some Iraqis have complained that the US has been sitting on its hands as the war has raged against ISIL, Iran-backed Shia militias have often accused the US-led coalition of parachuting weapons to ISIL fighters or even targeting Iraq’s security forces’ positions.‘
