Ongestraft schieten; joodse bevolking bewapent zich massaal

Israëlische joden gaan in toenemende mate gewapend de straat op. Politici roepen daartoe op en instanties helpen de mensen bij het verlengen van hun wapenvergunningen: (…) the Public Security Ministry has seen a sharp increase in the number of civilians applying for firearms permits or inquiring about how to renew their current permits, the ministry said Sunday. The ministry did not give an exact figure for the increase, yet said it is in the “tens of percentage points.” They said such an increase is typical for “periods when terrorism is on the rise,” and that they have extended the operating hours of their licensing branch in order to deal with the demand.
Deze ontwikkeling gaat gepaard met een vrijwel totale straffeloosheid in gevallen waarin joden Palestijnen – kinderen en volwassenen – aanvallen. Ook pepperspray wordt veel verkocht aan particulieren. Deze ‘volksbewapening’ beperkt zich niet tot de bezette gebieden (waar de kolonisten al zwaar bewapend waren) en Oost-Jeruzalem: The boost in demand was clear to see on the ground in Tel Aviv, at “Lahav,” a gun store and shooting range in southern Tel Aviv that’s been in business since 1949. The front counter was packed with almost a dozen customers on Sunday afternoon, most of them permit holders looking to train on the shooting range, pick up their licensed, state-approved pistol, or trade in their old ones for newer, lighter handguns that are easier to carry day in and day out.

5:01 vanmiddag. 332 Palestinians were wounded in the West Bank and East Jerusalem today, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported. 51 were wounded by rubber-coated bullets, 204 were due to gas inhalation, and six were burned. 32 others were wounded in the Gaza strip; seven by live bullets, 21 by gas, and four were run over.
4:14 vanmiddag. Jews tried to run over a group of Palestinian children in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, Palestinian reports say. There were no injuries.
3.27 vanmiddag. MK (Knessethlid) Ahmad Tibi, Joint List member: Once again the Israeli government and its leader are fanning the flames, implementing stricter policies on Palestinian minors, but maintaining the rules of engagement on the Israeli side. They’re creating the Wild West – there are public executions of Palestinians on the streets. Palestinians don’t need new reasons to incite violence; the Israeli government, its occupation, and its injustices are motivation enough for their anger.
1:55 vanmiddag. General strike in Arab sector: The Higher Arab Monitoring Committee declared a general strike on Tuesday in the Arab sector, including the education system. On this day, the committee decided, a demonstration will be held in the Galilee town of Sakhnin.

Autopech: ‘terreuraanslag verijdeld’
Maan News maakt weer melding van een Palestijnse ‘terreuraanval’ die volgens ooggetuigen een totaal andere toedracht had. Een Palestijnse vrouw met een driejarig kind kreeg autopech. Zij werd voor een terroriste aangezien. De langsrijdende politieman wordt in Israëlische kranten als held neergezet: Police say ‘car bomb’ set off, witness says it was electrical fault.

Frankrijk wil Israël-Palestina conferentie
De Franse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft naar nu bekend wordt gepleit voor een conferentie over het conflict. Ook werkt Frankrijk aan een resolutie over de voortgaande bouw van nederzettingen in bezet gebied. Haaretz vandaag: France to push for UN Security Council resolution on West Bank settlements. French FM Laurent Fabius told Quartet 10 days ago that France intends to advance resolution and hopes to convene follow-up conference in Paris on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Premier neemt Knessethlid Zoabi onder vuur
Premier Netanyahoe heeft de openbare aanklager opgedragen een onderzoek in te stellen naar ‘ophitsende’ uitspraken van Knessethlid Haneen Zoabi. Hierop staan inmiddels zeer zware straffen. Jpost: Joint List MK Haneen Zoabi said in response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to instruct the [openbare aanklager, JS] to investigate her for incitement that she would not be deterred by the “threats” and that she would continue her “just struggle for equality for all. I reject and I recoil from Mr. Netanyahu’s crazed words of incitement and from the Right that tries to trample everything in its way. His speech [the prime minister’s] demonstrates a moral and political bankruptcy,” Zoabi said that currently there is no difference between Netanyahu and the right-wing extremist bullies.
