Overleg Kerry – Israël: unilaterale stappen?
John Kerry heeft zeer intensief overleg gevoerd (nearly 5 hours ) met premier Netanyahoe: ‘One thing is clear: Israeli moves to change the situation on the ground were discussed. (…) Kerry told reporters that “we may be reaching a pivotal point now where both sides have important decisions to make for the future, and we obviously hope they make choices that will advance the prospects for lasting peace.” He said that both sides were now called on to take “affirmative steps” to reduce tension and demonstrate a commitment to a two-state solution.’

Het lijkt erop dat Israël het verzet in de bezette gebieden wil gebruiken om eenzijdige stappen te zetten ‘on the ground’: ‘Something is in the air, and it has the whiff of unilateralism. (…) Asked specifically about unilateral steps he may have in mind, Netanyahu said, “Well, unilateral moves in security and the economy are there”.’ Een vergaande deal tussen de VS en Israël zou kunnen zijn: ‘Which could very well be the unilateral step that Israel is considering: transferring to the PA large swaths of Area C.’ But Netanyahu made clear to Kerry this week that there would be a price: a green light for Israel to build inside the settlement blocks.‘ Washington ontkent, maar in Israël wordt gewezen op een briefwisseling tussen president Bush en premier Sharon in 2004 (Jaffadok komt hier morgen op terug).

De Klerk: 2-staten oplossing of apartheid
In een zeldzaam interview zei de vroegere premier van Zuid-Afrika De Klerk op de vraag van Yedioth Ahronot, of Israël een apartheidsstaat is: “I don’t think so. But if the two-state solution is not implemented, and if, in such a situation, the Jews have special rights while the Palestinians live as second-class citizens, Israel will become an apartheid state.”

Emiraten: Israël-kantoor is geen verandering in relatie
Het openen van een vertegenwoordiging van Israël in Abu Dhabi (een van de kleine emiraten die zijn verenigd in de VAE, de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten) brengt volgens een woordvoerder van de VAE geen verandering in de relatie tussen beide staten: “any agreement between [the International Renewable Energy Association] and Israel does not represent any change in the position of the UAE or its relations with Israel.” Israël zal in Abu Dhabi binnenkort een vertegenwoordiging openen bij de IRENA, de International Renewable Energy Association.
