Komt Abbas in VN met een “Bombshell”?
De president van de Palestijnse Autoriteit (PA) heeft in verschillende Arabische media aangekondigd dat hij op 29 september in de Algemene Vergadering van de VN een spectaculaire mededeling zal doen: “Abbas states that he is planning to shock the system by dropping a ‘bombshell’ at the end of his UN speech.” Het interview zelf zal de komende week gepubliceerd worden. Yedioth Ahronot: “Israeli officials warn of grave consequences if he ‘breaks the rules.” De voorpublicaties geven de indruk dat de Palestijnse topman verder gaat dan tot nu toe: “Abbas stated that his speech will focus on the Oslo accords, and the alleged Israeli violations of the agreement, like the destruction of Palestinian structures in areas A and B (in de Westoever, JS). Abbas also attacked the concept of the Jewish state in the interview, and stated that it provides radical groups like ISIS with legitimacy for their religious wars in the Middle East. “If Israel wants to be a Jewish state, it provides legitimacy to ISIS and others who seek to establish an Islamic state in Syria, Egypt, and Gaza.””
Yedioth speculeert over mogelijke Israëlische reacties, waarschijnlijk ingestoken vanuit regeringskringen: “Among the considered possibilities are the cancelation of the Oslo accords, dismantling the PA – leaving Israel responsible for the entire Palestinian population as an occupying force or declaring Palestine a “State under occupation” (international law terminology), which allows them to seek protection from the international community, while turning to the UNSC in an attempt to grant Palestine full state status. Israeli officials are already warning that if Abbas “breaks the rules,” Israel will review the possibility of exiling him, or blockade him within the West Bank – similar to what was done with Yasser Arafat.”
Nb: Dat laatste kan een effectief persoonlijk drukmiddel zijn. Abbas staat op het punt “met pensioen” te gaan. Zijn familie heeft een luxueuze woning in Jordanië. Het alternatief is een levensavond zoals Yasser Arafat die heeft meegemaakt in de ruïnes van zijn kantoor in Ramallah.

Partijleider Lapid pleit voor Arabisch vredesintiatief
Yair Lapid, de leider van de oppositiepartij Yesh Atid pleit voor het inbrengen in een opnieuw te starten vredesoverleg van het in 2002 door Saoedie-Arabië opgestelde Arabisch Vredesinitiatief (API) Haaretz: “(…) Saudi initiative not perfect, but the correct framework for jumpstarting talks. (…) Israel’s master strategy needs to be moving toward a regional arrangement which will enable full normalization of relations with the Arab states and the establishment of a demilitarized Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel.” Het API gaat uit van scheiding van joden en Palestijnen.

Reijkjaviks stelt bij
De burgemeester van de IJslandse hoofdstad Reijkjavik (waar de grote meerderheid van de bevolking woont) heeft de beslissing om Israëlische producten te boycotten teruggenomen. Er wordt een nieuw besluit voorbereid dat zich richt op de boycot van producten uit de bezette gebieden.

Duitsland tot Iran: verbeter relatie met Israël
De Duitse vice-kanselier Sigmar Gabriel heeft in Teheran Iran opgeroepen om zijn betrekkingen met Israël te verbeteren. Anders kunnen zij een belemmering worden voor intensieve handelsrelaties met Duitsland: “You can’t have a good economic relationship with Germany in the long-term if we don’t discuss such issues too and try to move them along. Questioning this state’s (Israel’s) right to existence is something that we Germans cannot accept.” De formulering maakt niet duidelijk of Gabriel bedoelt dat Israël als joodse staat moet worden erkend. Gabriel is in Iran om na de totstandkoming van de E3+3 overeenkomst (inzake Iran’s veronderstelde nucleaire programma) de economische banden aan te halen.
VS roepen op tot kalmte in Oost-Jeruzalem
De VS roepen “alle partijen” op tot kalmte rond de Al-Aqsa. Washington heeft intensief overleg met enkele partijen in de regio: “Kerry said that President Barack Obama had spoken about the situation in Jerusalem and in particular the violence on the Temple Mount with King Salman of Saudi Arabia. Vice President Biden talked with King Abdullah of Jordan, and I (Kerry) talked directly with Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel. It is important to maintain the status quo on the Temple Mount.”
Hamas pakt Israëlische drone
Hamas is volgens de Jerusalem Post van vandaag in het bezit van een Israëlische drone. Geciteerd wordt het met Iran verbonden Press TV: “Hamas’s military wing [the Izzadin] Kassam Brigade took control of the Zionist drone Skylark 1 and managed to make its services operational.”
Duitse burgemeester onder vuur wegens Israëlkritiek
De burgemeester van de Duitse stad Jena ligt onder vuur omdat hij de Israëlische politiek in de regio mede als oorzaak heeft genoemd van de vluchtelingencrisis.
