In de Israëlische kuststad Jaffa heeft zich gisteravond een confrontatie voorgedaan tussen demonstranten en de politie: Hundreds of Palestinians took part in rallies in the center of Jaffa, just south of Tel Aviv, to show solidarity with the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, a Ma’an reporter said. Volgens Israëlische kranten werden enkele politieagenten licht gewond. De emoties liepen ook op als gevolg van de berichten over het geweld van leger en kolonisten in de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever. Maan News: The demonstration in Jaffa comes amid a day of fierce clashes across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, with Palestinian medics reporting up to 129 Palestinian injuries in clashes with Israeli military forces. The reported injuries on Tuesday will bring the total injured since Saturday to over 600. Of those, Israeli forces have shot 49 with live rounds.

Derde “intifada”; what’s in a name?
Ook de New York Times vraagt zich af of er een derde Palestijnse volksopstand (intifada) aan komt. Belangrijk punt van overweging in de NYT is, of de Palestijnse Autoriteit deze nog wil tegen houden en of de PA daar nog toe in staat is. Het antwoord van de journalist is op beide vragen “ja”: Mr. Abbas, his popularity plummeting, is under intense pressure to challenge Israel, yet is worried that a violent uprising could benefit the militant Hamas. “Our instructions to our security devices, organizations and youths and people are that we do not want any escalation, but we want to defend ourselves,” Mr. Abbas said in a statement on Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, raising again the specter of Al Aqsa. “We want to reach a political solution by peaceful means and not any other way at all.” Hier en daar houdt de Palestijnse bevolking rekening met een belegering, zoals in de jaren van de tweede intifada: In Ramallah, some Palestinians bought extra canned and dry goods for fear of a repeat of Israel’s military siege on six West Bank cities in 2002.
In Haaretz komt de vraag aan de orde of de Israëlische regering de bevolking zou willen provoceren tot een complete volksopstand. Premier Netanyahoe zou een legeractie in oorlogsstijl (zoals in de jaren na 2000) willen vermijden, omdat hij niet van de PA af wil: Netanyahu Trying to Avoid Full-scale West Bank Military Operation. Such an operation, the prime minister knows, would only crush Palestinian rule in the West Bank, and is unlikely to thwart the recent wave of terror.

Palestijnse burgerwachten tegen kolonistenaanvallen

Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are increasingly forming patrols to protect their towns and villages from attacks by Israeli settlers. The trend has picked up since residents of the Palestinian village of Duma began forming voluntary groups to guard against attacks after an arson attack left an 18-month-old resident burned alive and his parents dead on July 31.
De kolonisten worden bij hun aanvallen meestal gesteund door het leger: Furthermore, violent acts carried out by Israeli settlers often occur in the presence of Israeli military who rarely act to protect Palestinian residents and few options for their personal security remain, according to documentation by rights groups.
