Hebron: Hier is het dragen van wapens door (joodse) burgers al doodnormaal
De burgemeester van Jeruzalem zegt dat het een geluk is dat zoveel (joodse) burgers gevechtservaring hebben in deze situatie: “One advantage that Israel has is that there are quite a few ex-members of military units with operational combat experience”. Hij roept ook joodse inwoners op om wapens te dragen: Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on Thursday called on residents who are licensed to carry weapons to do so on a daily basis. Barkat geeft zelf het voorbeeld: This week Israel’s Channel 1 broadcast images of Barkat touring the East Jerusalem neighborood of Issawiya with a weapon, saying he wanted to set an example during tense periods. “I don’t carry it every day and everywhere I go, only in conflict areas,” he said.
Ook de politiecommandant van Ashdod vindt blijkbaar dat joden niet-joodse verdachten neer mogen schieten: On Wednesday, the Commander of the Ashdod police station, Chief Superintendent Noam Shekel, also called on residents who have a weapons permit to carry them.

Menachem Klein en anderen zijn van mening dat de PA zowiezo groot gevaar loopt in de huidige situatie: But even without an invasion of the West Bank, Abbas’ situation is precarious. Klein believes the Palestinian president will try to cling on to power. “He fears that if he steps down or the PA collapses, Hamas will fill the void and be impossible to remove.” Nonetheless, most analysts agree that Abbas – or even the PA – could become a casualty of current events.
