Abbas zou een “bom” laten vallen in VN? Na gesprek met Kerry niet waarschijnlijk. Nieuw “frame”: Iran is antisemitisch.
Verwachting: Mahmoud Abbas haalt bakzeil
Mahmoud Abbas: kwam nimmer uit de schaduw van de man die de idealen maar ook het verdriet van de Palestijnen belichaamde
De speculaties over de speech die de Palestijnse president deze week houdt voor de VN lopen uiteen van het aankondigen van zijn aftreden tot het ontbinden van de Palestijnse Autoriteit. Naarmate het moment nadert, lijkt de verwachting dat de Palestijnse leider bakzeil haalt en hooguit symbolische krachttaal zal gebruiken toe. Dit laatste doet Abbas al jaren maar ditmaal is de frustratie in zijn achterban en de druk vanuit de Palestijnse bevolking groter dan die in lange tijd geweest is: “A recent poll found that Palestinians are increasingly exasperated with his leadership and Israel’s right-wing government. A majority favour a return to armed uprising in the absence of peace talks and two-thirds want Abbas to resign.”
Al weken wordt vanuit de omgeving van Abbas gesuggereerd dat hij een “bom” zal laten vallen: “In the runup to the speech, there have been reports that Abbas would use the opportunity to drop a “bombshell. Suggestions of what that could mean have included a complete withdrawal from the Oslo accords of the 1990s or the dissolution of the Palestinian Authority that those agreements created.” Over de stemming in de Palestijnse gemeenschap in de bezette gebieden zegt Maan News: “Organisers of a recent poll by the respected Palestinian Centre for Policy and Survey Research said for the first time in its surveys a majority called for the dissolution of the Palestinian Authority. It also showed 57 percent of Palestinians support a return to an armed intifada in the absence of peace negotiations, up from 49 percent three months ago.”

Jerusalem Post: “Habbash (PLO functionaris) said that Abbas and US Secretary of State John Kerry held “difficult” talks in New York last weekend during which they discussed the PA president’s threat to drop a bombshell at the end of his speech. Abbas did not elaborate on his recent statement, in which he said that he plans to drop a bombshell before the General Assembly. Some of his aides later said Abbas was planning to announce a Palestinian state “under Israeli occupation” – a unilateral move that is in violation of the Oslo Accords. PLO Executive Committee member Ahmed Majdalani said that Abbas would focus in his speech on the possibility that the Palestinians would revise their agreements with Israel.”
Generaal Al-Sisi: Arabische landen moeten vrede met Israël willen
De Egyptische leider Al-Sisi richtte in zijn speech voor de VN de aandacht op terrorisme en extremisme in het Midden-Oosten. Hij riep de Arabische landen op om (ook) te streven naar vrede met Israël. Premier Netanyahoe reageerde positief op de speech van de leider van het militaire regiem. Nb: Voor de overleving van het Egyptische regiem is het cruciaal om de steun te behouden van de (volgende) Amerikaanse regering en dus geen confrontatie met Israël aan te gaan.
Iraanse leider bekritiseert steun van VS voor Israël
De Iraanse leider Rouhani noemde militaire interventie (door de VS) en bezetting (door Israël) als de werkelijke oorzaken van oorlog en extremisme in het Midden-Oosten: “We must not forget that the roots of today’s wars, destruction and terror, can be found in the occupation, invasion and military intervention of yesterday.” Rouhani veroordeelde zoals gebruikelijk het “zionistische regiem” en vestigde de aandacht op de noodzaak om Israëls kernwapen te ontmantelen (Jerusalem Post): He repeatedly condemned the existence of the “Zionist regime,” and called for a nuclear-free Middle East (atoomwapenvrij Midden-Oosten) that rid Israel of its well-known nuclear stockpile. “Parallel to the implementation of the JCPOA (het Iranakkoord, JS), we also expect the nuclear-weapon states to take necessary steps to fulfill their commitment of full nuclear disarmament based on Article 6 of the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” he said. “Furthermore, we expect them to play a positive role in the creation of a ‘nuclear weapons-free Middle East’ and not to allow the Zionist regime to remain the only impediment in the way of realizing this important initiative.”
ADL: Iraanse leiders antisemiet
In een zeer uitgebreid artikel in de Jerusalem Post krijgt de vice-voorzitter van de Anti-Defamation League de gelegenheid om Iran van antisemitisme te beschuldigen. De beschuldiging betreft niet alleen de leiders van het land maar veel bredere kringen van de Iraanse maatschappij. In het stuk – dat de opmaat lijkt voor een “framing” van het Iran van na de nucleaire overeenkomst – wordt de “anti-joodse obsessie” vergeleken met de Zuid-Afrikaanse behandeling van zwarten en kleurlingen en met de visie op joden in Hitler-Duitsland: “This type of government-led but broad-based societal obsession with the “other” is not new.” Wat betreft de vergelijking met de nazi’s ziet de schrijver wel een verschil met de jodenvervolging: “One therefore should not compare the two situations except in one crucial area: the ideological component.
Nb: In de VS wordt momenteel door de neoconservatieven en de Israëllobby de basis gelegd voor een bijgesteld vijandbeeld van Iran. Mogelijk wordt dat een drukmiddel op de nieuwe president (na Obama) om het afbouwen van de sancties tegen Iran op grond van de gesloten overeenkomst, te frustreren: “Similarly, the anti-Semitic mindset of the regime should warn against seeing it as anything but the greatest danger to the region. Combating Iranian expansion, particularly if sanctions are lifted, should be the major priority of the West. Tactical alliances with a regime that holds such views is short-sighted and should be rejected out of hand.” Met “Iranian expansion” wordt geduid op Irans banden met Hezbollah en de Iraanse invloed in Syrië.
