Palestijnse vlag wappert in New York
De vlag: symbool van een Palestijnse staat? Of, teken dat onder Israëlisch gezag zes miljoen Palestijnen leven?
De president van de Palestijnse Autoriteit (PA) Mahmoud Abbas en de Secretaris-Generaal van de VN Ban Ki-moon hebben gisteren in een symbolisch gebaar de Palestijnse vlag gehesen voor het gebouw van de VN. Abbas tot de grote menigte die de ceremonie bijwoonde: “In this historical moment, I say to my people everywhere: raise the flag of Palestinians very high because it is the symbol of our identity. It is a proud day.” Ban Ki-moon sprak in zijn eigen stijl: “Symbolen zijn belangrijk en kunnen tot actie leiden.” De reacties van Israël en de VS waren negatief: Israel and the United States have dismissed the move as a symbolic gesture that would not serve the cause of peace. But Ban said symbols were “important” and could lead to action.

Abbas in VN: harde woorden, geen daden
De “bom” die sommigen in de omgeving van Abbas hadden aangekondigd bestond uit een speech met harde bewoordingen. Maar die moeten, zoals al enige tijd gebruikelijk bij de Palestijnse president, vooral worden gezien als signaal naar de VS, dat de Palestijnse achterban moeilijk meer in de hand is te houden. De PA zal niet “blijven vasthouden” aan de Oslo Akkoorden: Mahmoud Abbas told the UN General Assembly on Wednesday that the Palestinian Authority will not remain committed to agreements with Israel, referring to the Oslo Accords of 1993, while violations take place on a daily basis. (…) We therefore declare that we cannot continue to be bound by these agreements and that Israel must assume all of its responsibilities as an occupying power.” De “bom” had kunnen zijn het annuleren van de veiligheidssamenwerking met Israël of zelfs het opheffen van de PA.

De Times of Israel (ToI) over Abbas: He stated that Palestine was effectively a state under occupation, but that declaration carries no meaningful consequence. De ToI citeert Abbas:
“The state of Palestine, based on the 4th of June 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, is a state under occupation, as was the case for many countries during World War II. [Israël runt] an apartheid regime in the West Bank. [Israel] insists on continuing its destruction of the two-state solution and on entrenchment of two regimes on the ground. An apartheid regime that is currently imposed on the territory of the state of Palestine and against the Palestinian people on the one hand, and another regime of privileges and protection to the Israeli settlers on the other hand. Is it not time for racism to end?”

Archeologie: raid van leger en fundamentalisten in “area A”

Het Israëlische leger en een groot aantal radicale joodse kolonisten zijn gisteren “gebied A” binnen getrokken om door Palestijnen opgegraven oudheden te bestempelen tot joods erfgoed. “Area A” heeft betrekking op gebied dat volgens de Oslo Akkoorden volledig tot de jurisdictie van het Palestijnse bestuur behoort. Het park met de opgravingen ligt in het bestuursgebied Yatta ten zuiden van Hebron. De actie was breed opgezet: Settlers came from the nearby settlements of Maon, Karmel, Beit Yatir, Susya, and the outposts of Havat Yair, Mitzpe Yair, Havat Maon, and Avigal, in order to “perform religious rituals” for several hours. De burgemeester van Moussa Makhamreh, condemned the raid, pointing to the “dangerous nature of Israeli authorities’ and settlers’ racist actions taken under armed security.”
In de regio Yatta wonen 3.000 kolonisten in “Jewish only”-dorpen.
