Raket vanuit Golan landt in Israël
Routine: minister van Defensie in de bezette Golan
Dit weekend kwam een verdwaalde raket neer op het door Israël bezette deel van de Golan Hoogvlakte. Het Israëlische leger bombardeerde in antwoord daarop zondagavond Syrische stellingen. In dit gebied in Syrië vechten islamistische strijders, gelieerd aan Al-Qaida, tegen het Syrische
Ook toeristen nemen een kijkje
regiem. Met dit Al-Nusra Front heeft Israël al geruime tijd nauwe contacten. Het Syrische leger probeert de laatste tijd weer terrein te winnen op de islamisten. Hoewel niet onaannemelijk is dat de islamisten belang hebben bij deze escalatie, heeft Israël verklaart Syrië verantwoordelijk te houden voor elke raket die “afzwaait” (Jpost: “apparent errant fire”). Het incident komt in een periode waarin intensief overleg plaatsvindt tussen de VS, Rusland en andere landen over militaire operaties in Syrië.

Normalisering van een beeld: gewapende macht verjaagt gelovigen
Israëlische kranten herhalen als dagelijks nieuws dat de politie de orde herstelde nadat “stenengooiers op de Tempelberg (het Al-Aqsa complex) joden en toeristen bedreigden”: “Dozens of police officers entered the Temple Mount complex early Monday morning after dozens of Palestinians holed up in al-Aksa mosque began hurling stones and firebombs at them, police said.”
Het Palestijnse Maan News bericht over voortgaande aanwezigheid van gewapende troepen op het moslim heiligdom, vooruitlopend op een achtdaags joods festival: “Israeli police on Sunday imposed severe entry restrictions on Palestinians to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound ahead of an eight-day Jewish festival. Israeli police prevented all Palestinian men under 50 from accessing the site while holding the IDs of those men that were allowed to enter. Witnesses said that large numbers of Palestinian men performed evening prayers outside the mosque compound’s gates after they were prevented from entering. Earlier Sunday saw clashes across the compound after Israeli police stormed the holy site and fired rubber-coated steel bullets and stun grenades at Palestinian protesters. (…) tensions rose sharply ahead of the eight-day Jewish Sukkut festival, which began Sunday evening and is expected to see large numbers of Jews visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Maan News, vanochtend: “Israeli forces raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Monday and deployed heavily in the courtyard, leading to clashes with Palestinian worshipers ahead of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Officials from the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Endowment told Ma’an that dozens of Israeli forces raided the holy site and fired stun grenades and rubber-coated steel bullets “haphazardly” in the area. Around 15 snipers deployed on the roof of the southern mosque, while Israeli forces in riot gear were stationed in the main courtyards. Witnesses said Israeli forces closed the doors of the southern mosque with chains and forcibly evacuated worshipers from the area through the Hatta Gate. Locals also said that Israeli soldiers used hammer drills and oxy fuel wielding tools to remove several windows from the mosque.

Poetin: Geen Russische gevechtstroepen in Syrië
President Poetin heeft verklaard dat Rusland “momenteel” geen intentie heeft om gevechtstroepen te stationeren in Syrië: “Russia will not take part in any field operations on the territory of Syria or in other states; at least, we do not plan it for now.”
Extra kwelling hongerstakers
De Palestijnse Autoriteit beschuldigd Israël ervan Palestijnse hongerstakers medische behandeling te onthouden en hen in plaats daarvan op te sluiten tussen criminelen: “The Palestinian Authority’s committee for prisoners’ affairs on Sunday said that Israeli authorities have thus far refused the committee’s requests for seven Palestinian hunger strikers to be transferred to hospitals for treatment.. (…) the committee accused Israel of “trying to kill” seven hunger striking prisoners who have been on strike for 40 days, alleging that the“Israeli government is wearing down the prisoners on purpose in order to force them to end their hunger strike by depriving them of medical treatment and sending them to prison wards where criminal prisoners are being held.” Het gaat om zeven hongerstakers die protesteren tegen de beruchte “administratieve detentie”.

Republikeins-joodse lobby zorgelijk over Trump
De joodse lobby binnen de Republikeinse Partij maakt zich zorgen over de populariteit (ook onder republikeinse joden) van de uiterst rechtse kandidaten, met name Donald Trump. Er wordt gewerkt aan het sluiten van de gelederen achter de meer gematigde kandidaat (met meer kans op winst tegen Hillary Clinton), Jeb Bush. Bush heeft inmiddels een “joods team” gevormd: “Jeb Bush named a “Jewish leadership team” for his campaign that includes a number of Jews who were prominent in campaigning and working for his brother, the former President George W. Bush.”

Tegelijkertijd wordt erop gewezen dat populariteit op TV en onder het volk uiteindelijk minder belangrijk is dan de financiering van de kandidaten: “Mel Sembler, a Florida real estate magnate and a past financial chairman of the party, who backs Bush, said polls now showing outsiders in the lead mattered less than funds raised by candidates; and his candidate (Bush, JS) has raised over $100 million. What you have now is a popularity contest on TV and people pressing buttons, it’s all theater. What’s important in the long run (…) is who’s got the finances to sustain himself. Jeb Bush has raised $114 million and has $97 million in the bank. We’re here for the long haul.”
