100 jaar na Balfour: Palestijnen demografische winnaars

Nieuws van 1 januari 2016

Haaretz: in 2017 gelijkspel. Maan: vanaf 2020 duidelijke Palestijnse meerderheid. Apartheidsstaat naderbij.

In 2020 meer Palestijnen dan Joden

AND THE WINNER IS …: de jeugd

Het aantal Palestijnen zal het aantal joden binnenkort gaan overtreffen: ‘The number of Palestinians and Jews in historical Palestine is expected to be equal before the end of 2017, and the number of Palestinians will total 7.13 million compared to 6.96 million Jews by the end of 2020, according to the PCBS census.’

Commentaar

De cijfers die de demografische ontwikkeling in beeld brengen worden in toenemende gelezen tegen de achtergrond van het verdwijnen van het 2-staten model en de Israëlische eis dat het land wordt erkend als joodse staat: ‘Palestinian officials have repeatedly said that recognizing the concept of Israel as a “Jewish state” threatens the rights of nearly 1.5 million Palestinian citizens living inside of Israel. PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi has said that such recognition would in effect “legalized racism”.’

Ynetnews: groei totale bevolking

Ynet News schenkt aandacht aan andere cijfers, door het Israëlische Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek op hetzelfde moment (gisteren) bekend gemaakt: ‘Israel said goodbye to 2015 and ushered in 2016 with 8,462,000 citizens, data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) released on Thursday show.’ According to the CBS, 75 percent of Israelis (6,335,000) are Jewish, 21 percent (1,757,000) are Arab, and an additional four percent are considered “others” (Christians who are not Arab or people who don’t have a religious calassification).’

In 2017, honderd jaar na de Balfour Verklaring: fifty-fifty

Haaretz brengt wel de totale vergelijking: ‘Report: Palestinians to Equal Number of Jews by End of 2017. By the end of 2020, the report estimates, Palestinians in the entire territory will number 7.13 million, compared to 6.96 million Jews.’

The number of Palestinians worldwide is currently estimated at 12.37 million, with 4.75 million living in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank (1.85 million and 2.9 million respectively,) 1.47 million in Israel, 5.46 million in Arab countries and some 685,000 in non-Arab countries.

The report puts the total number of Palestinians in what it calls “historical Palestine” (Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip) at the end of 2015 at 6.22 million, compared to 6.34 million Jews. But Palestinian birth rates of 4.1 in the occupied territories (during 2011-2013) and 3.2 in Israel proper (in 2014) – compared to a rate of 3.1 births among Israeli women – are expected to bring the populations to parity in 2017. By the end of 2020, the report estimates, Palestinians in the entire territory will number 7.13 million, compared to 6.96 million Jews. The Palestinian population within Israeli is particularly youthful, according to the report, with some 34.8% aged below the age of 15 years in 2014. Only 4.2% of the Palestinian population in Israel is aged 65 years and over.’
